DATA PROTECTION

Introducing S3 Object Lock for Wasabi

When we talk about security in the cloud, what do we mean? It’s not just that your data will be there when you need it, but that it’s inaccessible to anyone but you. The worst thing that can happen to a system administrator is not seeing data where once there was data. Things happen. You could be the victim of a ransomware attack, leaving your data in the hands of a thief. You could make a few wrong clicks one night and, before you know it, your backups are gone. There are a thousand things that could go wrong that put your data, and your company, at risk. Having a secure cloud is all about mitigating those risks.

At Wasabi, we pride ourselves on our security practices, which is why we’re thrilled to announce that Wasabi has expanded its data immutability support with the introduction of S3 Object Lock.

Immutability is key

Data immutability is your best bet against unintended data loss. Object Lock gives you control over how you preserve and protect your data with immutability. Immutable data makes accidental deletions a thing of the past and stops would-be bad actors in their tracks. With this feature enabled, you can set unique immutability parameters for individual objects in your Wasabi bucket, making your data completely immune from being altered or deleted by anyone.

Object immutability is an essential tool where regulation and compliance standards are concerned. Government and regulatory bodies will often require data remain immutable for months or even years. CCTV footage, legal documents, medical and financial records should all be stored as immutable in accordance with the highest caliber of data protection.

How object lock works

Setting an object lock is like setting a timer. When you upload data to an Object Lock-enabled bucket, simply select the duration (in days or weeks) for the object to be immutable. The data will be set as immutable for that length of time and once the timer’s up it’s free to be changed or deleted. Simple as that.

To make Object Lock even easier for our customers to use, we’re very excited to be partnering with Veeam to bring S3 Object Lock to Veeam® Backup & Replication™ v10 and v11! The integration with these leading data management applications will extend the power of data immutability to the Veeam user base.

Wasabi S3 Object Lock is available in all Wasabi data centers at no additional cost to users. Wasabi customers are encouraged to take advantage of the added security of Object Lock for their data. For more information on how to use Object Lock, please refer to the Wasabi Knowledge Base.
