New Survey Reveals Data Challenges in Higher Education

August 5, 2024By Andrew Smith

The higher education sector is at a crossroads, grappling with an explosion of data that demands innovative solutions. As universities and colleges strive to keep pace, cloud storage has emerged as a game-changer, offering a lifeline for data management woes.

According to a new survey we conducted with Vanson Bourne, educators face three key infrastructure-related challenges: ensuring robust data security, achieving seamless accessibility, and accommodating ever-growing data needs with scalable solutions. These pressing issues underscore the pivotal role of cloud storage in education, and the need for modern data platforms to deliver more than just low cost.

Tightening security

In recent years, data security has seen a drastic increase in importance across industries as organizations and enterprises seek new IT solutions. In fact, 42% of survey respondents rank data protection and security within their top 3 considerations when choosing a cloud service provider. Universities and colleges are tasked with holding a stockpile of sensitive information, making them prime targets for cyberattacks and putting sensitive personal information and invaluable research at risk.

Cloud storage, on the other hand, offers a strong defense against these risks through security protocols and advanced monitoring. For example, offsite storage provided by the cloud, coupled with encryption and advanced user access features, make cloud storage a highly secure option for protecting sensitive data gathered across higher education.

Wasabi storage security features begin at the account level, with Multi-Factor Authentication, Multi-User Authentication, and Identity Access and Management policies. Object Lock for data immutability and SOC 2 compliant data centers position Wasabi as a trusted guardian of educational data.

Instant accessibility

As the educational landscape becomes increasingly digital, the need for seamless accessibility to data has never been more critical. Students and faculty require easy access to educational resources and collaborative tools, regardless of their location. Traditional data storage methods often result in fragmented systems, causing delays and inefficiencies.

Higher education organizations are being driven to use multiple cloud solution providers, with 43% citing an increasingly distributed and remote user base as a driver of this change. For students, access to learning materials is crucial for their success, and this availability is even more important if you’re studying remotely. For educators, it’s imperative that this data flow freely between providers and applications so their collection of solutions doesn’t become a problem unto itself. Cloud storage provides a platform where information can be accessed anytime, anywhere, fostering a collaborative environment. However, most cloud providers tax their users for accessing their own data, putting a hefty price tag on remote accessibility that many students and faculty rely on.

Charles Darwin University to create a comprehensive dashboard that enabled storage engineers and students alike to manage their data remotely, providing smooth operations campus-wide and beyond, with 70% of students off campus. By unifying data storage in an accessible platform, Charles Darwin University continues to enhance the collaborative experience and allow for widespread academic success and innovation.

Room to grow

Exponential data growth in higher education poses a significant challenge to existing storage infrastructures. Research data, digital libraries, multimedia content, and administrative records continuously expand, requiring scalable storage solutions that can adapt to increasing demands. Traditional storage methods often struggle to keep up, leading to inefficiencies and high costs.

A whopping 92% of education organizations shared how they expect their cloud storage capacity to increase in the next year. Cloud storage, with its scalable architecture, provides a flexible and cost-effective method to accommodate this growth, while also ensuring educational institutions can efficiently manage new volumes of data and provide a better user experience.

With our commitment to low-cost storage without hidden fees, organizations no longer face the financial strain that comes with traditional storage expansion. In partnership with Wasabi, an Ivy League University was able to eliminate the operation handling fees and expensive transfer process of storing their students’ data, an issue that they had previously faced with their LTO storage model. The flexible structure of Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage allows for seamless growth and a cost-sustainable solution that can provide for thousands of students.
